The news here in Haiti just gets stranger and stranger.
Within the last few minutes we got word that former dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier has returned to Haiti, landing at the Port-au-Prince, Toussaint Louverture International Airport at 5:30pm EST on an Air France flight from Paris.
We don’t know yet what this means or why he’s here for the first time since exiled in 1986, but it’s hard to imagine this is a good development.
I’ll keep everyone posted as soon as I hear anything more. In the meantime this article from the National Post might interest some of you.
Strange, indeed. Please keep us posted.

Looks like CNN.com is just as puzzled as everyone else: http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/americas/01/16/haiti.duvalier/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn
This seems…very oddly timed. Still keeping Haiti in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for the CNN link. I will take a look. Some seem to be speculating that he’s trying to step into the political vacuum left by last month’s elections and still no final results announced from that initial round of voting.
I’m kind of spooked by this myself.

I looked at the link and the most interesting detail to me is the fact that the UN has restricted the movement of its staff until further notice. They’re worried about Duvalier’s intensions. That in and of itself is worrisome!

I certainly hope that’s not true…that will make things worse.

I was absolutely stunned when I saw it on the news and wanted to write to you immediately. And then I thought, What’s Kathy supposed to do, arrest him?

It’s all so strange, because so many I talk to here, think he was a decent guy–something I will have to post about tomorrow. At least now he has been arrested, and I didn’t even have to get involved!
