Just a bit of background——————–

This blog begins in January of 2009, when my partner Sara was planning to resume her work in disaster response with an international housing NGO.  Initially, we expected to live in  Bangkok, but plans changed, and we ended up in Vietnam, first Saigon and then Hanoi.

On January 12, 2010, as we watched news coverage of the earthquake in Haiti, I knew Sara (who directed the same NGO’s response to the 2004 tsunami) would be asked to work there soon.   And, indeed, she was on site in Port-a-Prince in less than two weeks.  I followed in June, after teaching a service-oriented writing course in India.

After some months of silence, the blog picks up again in November 2010 from Port-au-Prince and covers our move to Ecuador in 2013, where we founded a creative center called idiomART, still thriving in Cuenca’s historic center.

Having returned to the US for family reasons during the pandemic. I once again live in Ecuador. I no longer lead idiomART, but I have a studio there. Now I’m one of many fine artists and writers who call idiomART their creative home.

  3. I found you and your blog through Thirdeye Mom’s blog. One of my sons was born in Saigon, Vietnam. We spent a month in Vietnam when we adopted him and we fell madly in love with the culture and its people! We can’t wait to go back someday. Glad I found your blog!
